I've heard that recording, and I have to say that I sort of agree with Jerry. If a song is worth playing, then work on it for a while and get it right. Then the question becomes: Is it really worth putting all that time into Ain't That Peculiar. I'd say no. But yeah, he sounds pretty cranky on that tape, and kind of pissed off at Vince, in particular.

"work on it for a while and get it right?" By '93, there were songs they had been playing for over a quarter of a century they couldn't get right, yet alone "new" ones to add to the fold. Jerry could not get thru Chuck Berry covers without flubbing. SLOTH. still say they blew it by not doing He's Gone>She's Gone with Hall & Oates at MSG for the rainforest benefit... Funny, but which band is still working and arguably more relevant now? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkL8gR7__As&index=4&list=PLC8E055D893DA9831 got time to hate? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PldQczB_VSs&index=13&list=PLC8E055D893DA9831

No hate here, friend. I love me some blue-eyed soul. I hear Bob handling the main vocals, with Jerry and either Brent or Vince coming in on the "I better learn how to face it" and "I'd pay the devil to replace her" bits.

Here are a couple of other things they could have worked into the rotation:

Summer '84, post-Space:

Space> Row Jimmy> Top Jimmy (w/ Jump tease)> Other One> Panama> Other One> Top Jimmy reprise> Sugar Mag

And my friend Zephyr suggested this combo:

Autumn, '77:

China Doll > Boulder to Birmingham > Bird Song > Angel From Montgomery > Free Bird. E1: Chelsea Hotel. E2: Sweet Home Alabama

Those guys could sing, not always these case with our boys . Nice arrangements . Not exactly deep waters here , and some of it lends it's self to a high cheese factor, but fun , and hey, I've heard they are nice guys , unlike say, Rod Stewart (A recent Jeff Beck comment about Rod "We have a love/hate relationship, he loves me and I hate him".) Those latter day covers with the Dead, rarely work all that well . They rarely made them sound their own . I like some more than others , but this band is having problems . As you mentioned , sloth, also , no leadership, deteriorating musical abilities, and a sense of disinterest from Garcia ( He shire seems more engaged with Grisman, or even his own Band) .

A friend of of friend , has played with Brian Wilson , and did the tour with Beck ( sadly it apparently didnt 't so well) . One of the stories , is driving through Vegas, and passing the Hotel were Rod was playing and Beck sticking his arm out the window flipping the "Rod Stewart" sign off . I don't know the details, but he is pretty unhappy, to say the least, with him . The scuttlebutt in the pro music biz, is Stewart is the biggest prick out there . But yeah, I'd like to see a Faces tour ! It is hard to explain to youngsters, how great Rod Stewart was tin the early 70's .I can think no one who has pissed away his cred more than Rod . On the other side, two of the nice people mentioned, were Phil Collins (what ever one might think of his music), and Rodger Daltry .

Collins is apparently practicing again - it's time for the Lamb Lies Down reunion tour (which won't happen)

I'm curious. H&O are still working? I know they just got into the R&R HOF but how often does Hall allow Oates to stand next to him nowadays? Much as I loved them, that was not an equal pairing imo.

"Music, once you're in that thing where it gets to be so facile, where it's all technique and no substance. It looked like it was going to hang there for a good long time, but luckily it didn't last very long, because ultimately it's really boring. People are not that interested in it."
